V70 vibration V70-XC70 2004

I have a vibration that's making me crazy trying to figure it out.
Started out as what sounded like bad motor mounts (all of a sudden) when lightly engaging throttle. Low pitch thudding sounds, disappears when adding throttle.
It got better for a day or so after I changed the top torque rod. Since changed all mounts and torque rods even the mounts for the engine bay cross for the upper torque rod. All mounts are Hutchinson. Did the loosen passenger side mount and shake motor around then retorqued. This made a difference for about 2 blocks.
Other things that started at same time. I hear but don't feel an out of round sound, kind of like a bad tire belt, increases with speed. Tires are Blizzaks and like new and were fine last winter. There is a hum from the engine bay that is there all the time. It gets more noticeable when accelerating but you don't feel a vibration at all. Noise is there coasting with clutch engaged or not.
Any ideas?

So here is what I figured created the main vibration.
The upper torque rods died which allowed the engine to rock forward and backwards softening the rubber hangers which hold the cat at the flex pipe. The softened rubbers allowed the exhaust to move downward enough to intermittently hit the cross brace between the cat and resonator. Even with the new torque rods plus all the new mounts I didn't need to change the flexie hangers allowed too much movement.
I didn't have any new hangers so I bent the cat support slightly downward which tightened the hangers. Vibration gone. New cat time soon as the head pipe cracked when I bent it. I brazed that closed but the metal is pretty thin.
    thanks all.

Good catch on the exhaust noise!
A little vague on this - I am not familiar with your model’s exhaust. On your car is it a flex pipe or a solid header pipe on your car? As I recall, both my 95 850 wagon and my 2002 Passat wagon have flex pipes attached to the cat.

2.4 non turbo. Flexpipe off the header leading to the cat.
Flexpipe was a tad thinned. Exhaust leak today. Flexpipe let go. Wasn't happen with the different loading.

Yup, had to replace the flex pipe on the Passat about a 1 1/2 years ago. No complaints - lasted 220k. The exhaust on both cars has been remarkably long lasting! The flex pipe is the only exhaust part I’ve replaced on the Passat. On the 850 (same 2.4 NA engine as your car), the only exhaust part I ever replaced was the rear hanger through 250k of ownership....

I swapped out the "NEW" upper torque mount with a new style version
(https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo-engine-torque-rod-mount-30680770) vs the open rubber insert type. Vibration really cut down, quite minimal now. I think what I hear now might be the exhaust. Will change the rubber hangers and see.

Passenger bearing is new (SKF) drivers is smooth hand checked.
Tires are in like new condition. Re-torqued all lugs. No change.
Something occurred to me; the head pipe just before the cat and after the flex had broken. I just attributed it to rust. It was nice and clean so I just brazed it up.
The upper torque rod is what stops the motor moving too much in a forward and backward plane so too much movement would stress the exhaust. The upper torque rod being loose is where this all started.
I'm thinking the rubbers holding the exhaust are softened allowing the vibrations (general and intermittent) I hear. The exhaust didn't feel much different from any other time.
    On going.
thanks all and have a good Christmas, I'm going skiing.

The second sound could be a bad wheel bearing.

Regarding the first, is it possible that you have lug nuts that are slightly loose? Had a similar issue with my 2002 Passat recently. Turned out the left front lug nuts weren’t fully tight.

You can also swap the tires front to rear and listen for any change.

      What does the odo say?
