Duplicating a key V70-XC70 1999

Has anyone had experience with creating a duplicate key with the "V46.02 SBB Multi-Language SBB V46 Auto Tool Immobilizer Multi-brands" found on ebay? It claims to use the OBDII port to read the immobilizer code, and then (I guess) to program a blank key with included transponder, available separately on ebay. Or is this just wishful thinking on my part to avoid paying a dealer through the nose?

Our 99 V70 came with only one key.

If you spend $100 on a transponder coding device, you still have to buy a blank key and have it cut, probably for another $50. This may or may not work. And the dealer wants how much for a key that will work?

      Duplicating a key using a local locksmith V70-XC70 1999

      hello Klaus,

I acquired this 2006 xc70 about a week ago. It has only one key and it will lock but will not unlock. I have to use the physical key to unlock the car.

I am considering taking it to a local locksmith to see what he can do with it or get his advice.

The car has been sitting for at least three years I would guess from the evidence of spider webs, etc., throughout various inside areas. I tried pressing the lock and unlock buttons simultaneously but this brought no change.

Like your other correspondent I have only the one key and would like to get another but I have not yet spoken to the local Volvo dealer. He runs a wrecking yard for Volvo as well I might add.

What would be your course of action given these circumstances?

      Bob

If it locks with the keypad suspect the tiny switch underneath the unlock button. Take a magnifying glass and look at the tiny legs that attach it to the green circuit board. There is a good chance the the solder has come loose on the outer/ left hand upper one. That is the one nearest the corner of the board. I've had 2 go like that and it just takes a few seconds to reflow and add a new dab of solder. Worked for me. This connection takes all of the force when you push that switch with your thumb. That's my theory anyway.

getting the key apart V70-XC70 1999

          Hello again Derek,

I finally tried to open the key using the small torx screw, only to find that it only separates the physical key from the electronic works.

How do I get to the underside of the unlock button? Can I use a knife to crack open the case? I only have the one key and would not like to damage it trying to open something that is not designed to be opened.

If it will pop open and can then be popped closed I will go ahead and give it a try.

          Bob

Using the physical key, lock and unlock the car 3 times. That is supposed to do some kind of a reset.

As for getting an additional key, hang on to your wallet - expect the dealer to charge $250++.

So this is the message I get from the dealer: Bring the car in with title and registration and they will order a pre-cut key from Volvo for $85. When that arrives in a few days, they will make a service appointment and charge a $38 "software fee" and $175 for labor. So about $300 to get a couple of keys.

Yes I would only be saving $100, but you can see why it would be nice to avoid those three trips to the dealer, including the inconvenience of having someone twice having to drive me and pick me up for the service trip.

And I haven't been on BB for awhile, but it's sure nice to see that you're still active, Klaus. Take care.

Thats the kind of answer I would expect from a service advisor. I usually bypass them and talk to the parts department or the service manager. The parts dept can order the key, you drive there, show them your registration and driver's license, and they order it for you.

Then you ask the service manager to charge you for only 30 minutes time and NO software charge, because there is NO software download.

Key ordered today, have high hopes that thirty minutes labor time will be enough to get the job done? And there is no software download?
          Thank you KlausC!

That sounds better, and from what I see, using a cheap key programmer can fry the car if you don't know what you're doing ... even if it works on this particular Volvo.
