Oil leak and turbo 850 1995

1995 Volvo 850 turbo replace the turbo retun line o-ring

Ok here it goes..i have a oil leak..a pretty good one about half quart a week..after having the car on the lift twice with a local garage and also having it on the lift of 2 volvo repair places i am totally confused..one volvo shop told me it was the PVC valve but i thught the 1995 turbo did not have a PVC..the other volvo garage told me it was a bad turbo or the tubing that goes to the turbo is bad and the turbo still needs to be replaced. I have been under the car and really cannot locate where the leak is coming from but it does seem to be coming from the turbo area.....Any ideas..any thing else i should check replace?
its not the oil pan not the oil pan plug not the rear main seal

thanks
Randy

check the "racetrack" seal just under front crank for the cooler lines. The front crank seal,if leaking there, check the thrust bearing for movement,I've had a couple of these in the last 2 years show up(bottom end repair).also check the rear cam seals and front cam seals. it is not uncommon to see a small drip of oil under the turbo.the oil return line also likes to leak.(about $10 in parts).there is no flame trap in turbo engines but it does not hurt to clean the breather box .If you have alot of blow-by from the dipstick when the engine is hot with the car running, turbo or normally asperated 850, clean the breather box and check the vacuum hoses for collapse(very common)

A leaking turbo oil return line is very common and you might
want to check out this site for instructions:

http://volvospeed.com/Repair/turborepairline.htm

I think a new o-ring is under a buck and it is easy to fix.

A turbo model does not have a PCV valve (or flame-trap in
Volvo speak).

Turbo failures are rare enough that I would fix the return
line first if there are any signs it is leaking.

You might also consider a Volvo dealer. I bet they replace the
turbo return line o-rings all the time and can diagnose the
problem better then your 2 garages.

i agree with ray. go with the o-ring first. it's not that hard. also, try tightening the fittings on the hoses in that area and also tighten the turbo return line itself. the intense heat in that area tends to loosen thing up a bit. i'd like to replace those coolant hoses (one is for oil and the other is for coolant - if i recall correctly) but they are really in there tight.

like was said earlier, replace the o-ring and make sure everything else is secure.

If you leak that much very strong possible that it could be your rear main seal

mine just been replace before I buy the car...

rear main seal leak it the bigest prolem and the cost for repair is around $1000
not cheap..

hopefully this will not be but take a closer look...

good luck...

First thing I would do is to clean and degrease the engine of all old oil and grime. Then put it up onto some ramps or up onto blocks and see where the oil is leaking from. with a flashlight, a mirror, and some rags you should be able to narrow it down at least. Just make sure that you block the wheels and set the parking brake before you climb under a car with an engine idling in park.
