Frustrations and questions 850 1995

My glt wagon is due for the 90k tune-up. Is there any place i can find the specs for this? I was quoted $675 for this @ the closest dealer (appx. 120 miles away). I swung by a local foreign mechanic, and we both couldn't figure why the cost was so high by what was in the owner's manual. Anyways help would be appreciated.

I had to pop my hatch panel loose to tighten down the latch. It had gotten so loose that the door wouldn't close. Now the panel won't stay clipped on. I had the dealer repair it, got it home and it popped loose within a week. I took it back, had it fixed again, and the same problem again..... I'm sick of the rattles, is there any way to re-attach this thing so it'll stay. Before I had to pop it loose, it was rock solid.

Has there been any reported fixes to the driver's side windshield wiper issue? It's difficult (add dangerous and annoying) that it lifts off the window 1/2 way through it's sweep. My wife can't drive this car when it's snowing bad because of this. >:(

A 90K service is same as a 30K service. Here in the San Francisco
Bay Area (where labor is high) it runs $479 at a dealer. You may
also want to flush the brake fluid and transmission fluid which
could add another hundred. Brake pads also seem to be needed at
about 30K intervals so that could add more. But, seems to me you
could get all of that for less then the $675.

Did the dealer that quoted $675 actually see the car?

I've taken this car to the sister dealer (both owned by the same person, roughtly 10 miles apart)of the one that quoted me this. All servicing I've had done there(70k when i bought it, 80k w/ timing belt, serp belt, rear brakes; fix the hatch 2x)and their comps are networked together. I was talking to them over the phone, and he had the car pulled up on the comp. as we had been discussing the hatch.

I wasn't there in person, I was making the appointment by phone this time.

Then the number seems pretty high. I thought maybe they had inspected
the brakes (and other parts) and determined that other work was needed.

Make sure the wiper arm attach nut is tight. I've found mine loose a couple of times. Other than that, bend it back into shape and it should be okay. If not, get a new arm.

Almost forgot: The hole in the wiper arm attach point can get worn, allowing the arm to be loose even though the nut is tight. The only permanent solution to this is to replace the arm.

I had the same trouble with the windshield wiper lifting off at speeds greater than 50. Then I bought Volvo wipers( the blade plus the rubber) and no more lifting. As for the cost of the service, that sounds like the price of the 60k where they have to change the timing belt and accessory drive belt. If they are doing that, then it's worth it. These cars will last forever if properly serviced. You can do a lot of this stuff in your garage if you're so inclined. Check out volvospeed.com ...bay 13.

The 90K service cost less than $350 at my dealership. It's a 3.5 hour service @ $90 per hour plus parts. $675 is more than double what it should be assuming that that's all it is (nothing additional?).
The rear hatch panel should have been repaired with the repair kit that adds metal plates to the upper plastic ears that always distort/break and once done, that cures the problem. I can't imagine why they wouldn't have done that as that kit's been available for years now and it's a known problem.
Now for the easy part, all you need to do for the RF WW arm is simply bend it back down. Turn the wipers on and stop them (key off) at 12:00, then push the part of the arm (just before the pivot point) downwards towards the windshield. That's it. I think that that occurs when it's either frozen to the glass (ice) in winter and/or one's trying to have it push heavy snow as we see that often in the winter.

I just ordered the hatch panel kit from IPD. The dealer was supposed to use a kit the last time, i paid for one, but i'm going to get one and install it myself this time (read...do it right.)

There shouldn't be anything major this round. I had the timing belt done on the 80k tune-up. I bought it with more than 70k, and didn't have any record of it being done, so I had them replaced it and the serp. belt.

I'll try bending the arm this AM and hopefully it'll be cured.

:)
