Had 60k service done on our '99 V70 on 12/6/02. On 12/9/02 ETS light came on for first time ever. Called dealer. Was told if it came on again to bring car in. Came on again 12/22/02. Dealer ran a check, said code "91A7" came up indicating need for new throttle body. $700.00 spent on 12/23/02 to have TB and new software installed. Not how I wanted to send a chuck of my Xmas money.

Couple of questions for the group.
Could anything that was done during the 60K have caused this (reciept indicates throttle body was cleaned and fuel system cleaner added to gas tank)?
Does this code indicate a bad throttle body or just a need for software (seems to me I've read somewhere that 91A7 just means a need to reinstall software)?

Gents,in my experience(this bit of info is from an "expert volvo tech")the vehicles from 99 and newer have special software that requires a download if any one of the many sensors is disturbed.My brother has 99 V70 T5 and it had the same problem with the idle "hunting" while at a light.We instructed him to clean the throttle body only!This was kind of difficult because the fan assy should be removed so you can get to the t.b.Usually over time it gets a lot of buildup that causes the electronic throttle to "hunt for a happy medium".The 98 and older are a piece of cake,just remember to replace the gasket.So if for any reason any of the sensors are replaced or tampered with by a shop that does not have the volvo software,beware that you car may not start and may trigger several codes.Hope this helps.

I have an S70 with the same problems...throttle body and software replacement. Car was lunging and ETS light came on twice. My car has 36K. I talked to an independent Volvo mechanic and he said that this is common problem on the newer cars after 1995. No recall by Volvo but I feel Volvo should foot the $700 bill. I contacted Consumer Affairs to lodge a complaint in hopes of Volvo issuing a recall and recoup my money. If anyone has the same problem, please call Consumer Hotline Auto Safety at 1 800 424-9393. We need to put pressure on Volvo to build a reliable car, not just a "safe" one!

They usually go past the 4 year, 50K mile warranty before failing so to Volvo, that's not a problem.

A recall is purely safety related so an ETM wouldn't fit into that category.

Volvo didn't start using ETMs until '99, not '95 and in '02, they were totally redesigned.

I do not recall a dealer cleaning the throttle body as part of the 60k service. I will tell you that I once took my throttle body off to clean it and when I replaced it, it gave off a code that indicated the sensor had to be replaced. Seems to me that if they cleaned your throttle body (and I don't know if they took it out or merely sprayed it with throttle body/carb cleaner), that the material could have fouled up your sensor. I do not know why software would need to be reinstalled since there is nothing but a sensor at the throttle body. The software is in the ECU unit.

Might seem coincidental but there's nothing done during a 60K service that can cause an "internal fault" code in an ETM. They do sometimes fail around that mileage, give or take a few.

Was this service done at a Volvo dealer????

Yes... The 60k service & replacement TB/software upgrade were both done at the same dealer

The reason I asked is because I thought Volvo says in the owners manual NOT to add any fuel or engine oil additives????
