Transmission slipping in park position V70-XC70 1998

My 98 V70R is slipping when I stop and put in park if I am on an incline. It will roll backwards a couple of inches, stop and roll again before it catches. If I put on the emergency brake first this doesn't happen. My mechanic said that there aren't any adjustments that can be done on this transmission for the Park gear.

Has anyone else experienced this? Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Lynda

May I humbly suggest, then, that you use your parking brake when you park?

Seriously, the parking brake is just for that purpose--when you park. It keeps the car from moving. There is no "Park" in a manual transmission--one puts it in an appropriate gear and firmly sets the parking brake. An automatic transmission is no different.

    Please use your parking brake.

      Parking gears don't 'slip.' V70-XC70 1998

A parking gear is a gearbox lockup, and is far more secure than your "parking brake," which is just a primitive, mechanically-levered shoe-brake. A certain amount of roll or play is to be expected in any automatic parking gear, but if it the vehicle never becomes truly secure (the gear is not properly engaged) then something is very wrong with your transmission.

You don't mention how many miles on the car, but if it's a lot, then the normal amount of "play" will be increased because of wear on the mechanism. You can use the emergency brake (the proper term for the handbrake) to eliminate the play between the moment you stop and the parking gear engages - but if you're convinced the parking gear is not properly engaged, you should really get this checked out by someone confident in his or her ability to assess the situation.

      Here's a link that explains a parking gear: http://www.howstuffworks.com/automatic-transmission5.htm

(Operators of manual transmissions sometimes use the hand brake for parking, but usually leaving the car in first or reverse is more than enough. It's useful, however, when the car is idling in neutral.)

(The term "parking brake" is a misnomer. No doubt your state inspectors and motor vehicle officers refer to it as the "emergency brake." It's true purpose is to be available at unlikely moment when the hydraulic brakes fail. And believe me, they are no substitute for real brakes, either.)

Thank you Cleeland for your reply. I do usually use the parking brake, but sometimes I take my foot off the brake before I put on the parking brake. My husband thinks that something is wrong with the parking gear, that it should not slip....he is the one that doesn't like to set the parking brake!!

i have a 98 v70 and it does the same exact thing. i think it is that when an auto tranny car stops there is still alot of torque on the drive train and although you put the gear selecter in park everything doesn't align until that torque is released.( engine shut off and brake released) if the cars was a manual, pressing the clutch pedal would do that. this might not make any sense, but the voices in my head say it does.

The use of a parking brake is not the point, when the transmission is in park it should prevent the vehicle from moving on any hill. Its not unusual for the vehicle to move a inch or so backwards but should then stop. What is happening is that the parking pawl ratchet is not properly engaging,as this is most likely an internal trans problem take it to your Volvo dealer.
