Hanging up in Park V70-XC70 1998

My V70R AWD is hanging up in Park. I push the button on the shifter and it won't depress. I have to turn the steering wheel back and forth and keep playing with the button to get it to depress so I can get out of Park.
It was happening every so often, but now it is getting almost constant. I'm afraid one day I won't be able to get it out of Park. Is there some adjustment that needs to be done? I'm not having any problems with the transmission as far as shifting or slipping problems.

Thanks!

My wife's car had the same problem. I lubricated both sides of the plastic part you depress (as it would slide into the shifter). Works fine. Someone about 3 months ago was having a similar problem, and I suggested this fix. Worked for him too. The button you depress is spring loaded. My guess is that the spring moves somewhat and expands the plastic that you depress thereby making it hard to push.

    Good luck.

P.S. Masher's comment has some merit too.

With just the ignition turned all the way ON so only the idiot lights show but no motor running, tap your brake pedal---you should hear the locking solenoid releasing in the shifter. If not, your pedal switch is either out of adjustment or is SHOT! The button is a "manual" release, I would think it would work regardless of ignition! Something sounds a little wacky!Your ignition switch could be getting flaky as well.

My '98 V70 AWD just diagnosed with a bad gearshift solenoid after exhibiting the same behavior. It's a psuedo safety mechanism tied to the brake pedal, just as Masher described. Dealer replacement isn't cheap but it may be preferable to pressing that little override button to get it in gear.
