Clutch? adj Q? 850 1993

Is the engagement point adjustable? Or has the clutch reached the end of its life?

IT seems that it doesn't want to completely dissengage -

anyone have any experience with this?

It's hydraulic, no adjustment so if there's no fluid leak to explain a hydraulic problem, then the disc is worn and it's time for a clutch job.

Sorry Ed, just because the clutch actuation is hydraulic, doesn't mean it is not adjustable. Every car that I have ever worked on, with a hydraulic cluch, has been adjustable. I am not familiar with Volvo's adjustment points, but the fact that it is hydraulic doesn't have anything to do with it.

Really? I've been a Volvo tech for over 18 yrs so where then do YOU think it can be adjusted? Take a look, read the OEM MT or clutch manuals then you tell me. My own 745T use to have a MT, hydraulic clutch setup too before I converted it to AT (big improvement for that car), it had no adjustments.
I've also worked on other import car makes for years that had no adjustment points, some suburus, BMW, some old english cars and none were adjustable.

no adj - period?

One thing I was tryin to hash out in my head . . .

It would seem that as you push in on the clutch it starts moving it? So if it starts moving it at the top of the stroke and the problems are at the bottom?

Basically the engagement point is the same point that the switch is to allow the car to start. Just to clarify myself. That means it is worn?

I'm just hoping for some measure of something to say that it is not time for a new clutch . . .

Like bleeding the clutch cylinder? would that help?

....but the car has 170K miles on it right? If you'ld like, you can try bleeding the clutch slave cylinder just to rule out the slight possibility that air somehow got in there but unless the brake fluid either went too low or there's a hydraulic leak (either clutch master or slave cylinder), air would not normally get in there by itself. Do inspect both hydraulic parts for evidence of brake fluid just to be sure. Bleeding the slave cylinder will at least eliminate hydraulic problems as being a possible cause and it's easy to do, best done with a brake bleeded (either vacuum type or power brake bleeder using pressure).
A worn clutch disc will cause the problem you're describing here so at 170K miles, that wouldn't really surprize me alot.
Volvos with hydraulic clutch systems like yours do not have any adjustments. There's then only 2 possibilities, worn clutch disc or a hydraulic problem (fluid leak or air in system).

Thanks Ed,

I'l check for fluid and bleed the slave . . . (not sure when the brakes were bled last . . might be time for that too).

The Clutch, it turns out, was replaced at 125k miles. Hopefully its just air in the system making it squishy. Now my wife is saying it isn't an all the time problem.

Its tough being the service "advisor" and mechanic on a car you don't drive much. . . . no wonder dealers screw stuff up more than they fix em ;)

thanks everyone

I don't remember seeing the work done (one of these cars that teh in laws wanted to trade in but were only offered $850 so they gave it to us and we had to sell the '86 240 wagon . . . not sure but at this point i might have taken the $850 and put it into the wagon right now). . . . :D

I was afraid it would be a hydraulic clutch . . . :( thans for the confirmation
