AC Compressor Clicking, but system fully charged 850 1994

This is my first post, this board is GREAT. I read all the posts about a clicking compressor and that usually means your low on freeon. Well I went and bought a guage to check the level and some freeon. The guy said the system should be at about 25-27 PSI's, I checked my system and it was at 45 PSI (Engine on, AC on full blast) Not only does the compressor turn off and on while i'm driving with the AC on, the cold air stops coming out sometimes for a brief second, then kicks back on.

I really have no idea what to do, any thoughts? One more thing there comes a high pitched "squel" sometimes from the compressor while i'm driving.

2. When do you suppose to add PAG oil to the AC system, how do you know you need to?

Thanks in advance.

AC Compressor Clicking, but system fully charged 850 1994

I had symptoms that sound nearly identical on my '93 last year. The A/C would come on and run for a while. The compressor would cycle on and off frequently. Then after 10-15 minutes it would quite blowing cold air. If it was left off for a short period of time, you could turn it back on and the cycle would repeat. I read many similar posts, and almost invariably the poster was advised to recharge the system. I checked my system, and it seemed to be fully charged. Adding a small amount of R134a simply caused the system to quit working entirely.

Root cause: Bad compressor. It was a fairly expensive fix, but it still seems to be working.

So did you wait for your compressor to go out compeletly? Or did you go ahead and chnage it? I was afraid of this, I was hoping that it was just as simple as recharging it. Would it help if I added some oil to the system?

      Thanks

Ok, so the story gets crazier. It turned out the gauge I bought was bad. The preasure was at 25psi's which with the outside temp at 90, was to low. I added a bottle of freon and things seem to working fine. I don't know one thing, even with a good charged system... does the compressor still cycle and if so how often? Mine is cycleing about every 1-2 min's. IS this normal or not?

        Thanks for any help.

Do these cars have a high pressure port? If not, you cannot check the high pressure, i.e. output of the compressor. So, how would you know it's dead other than to replace it? I struggled with this on my 93 940. My 93 940 has no high pressure port, I had a shop add one to a line, turned out my compressor was fine. With R134a you need to be charged pretty close to dead nuts for it to blow cold. Too little doesn't do it, and too much doesn't do it. Rebuilt compressors are at least 200 bucks.

I went ahead and changed it. It wasn't cooling adequately the way it was. I added both some oil and R134a, but as I said, this didn't help. Once the system pressure was too high, everything quit working entirely. Bleeding excess off returned the system to previous condition.

I'm having the exact same issue w/ my '98 S70 GLT...I'd also like to know if this requires a new compressor as well? Thank you.
