Ok, here's one for you experts 850 1996

My '96 base 850 cranks over but does not start. I checked but there are no OBD codes. Not a fuel problem. Seems the coil has no spark. The strange thing is that when I pull a few things apart, the car will start. This is an intermittant problem. Most times the car starts just fine. I replaced the ignition switch and coil but saw no improvement. What could be intermittantly failing but would not set a code? Appreciate any suggestions. I've been scratching my head on this one for a while.

Thanks,
Tluv '96 850 145k and running great (once it starts:))

Camshaft positioning Sensor. I had the same problem.

Just what things are you pulling apart that makes the car start? How did you confirm there is no spark?

I'd think that no signal from the camshaft position sensor would throw a code.

I typically pull the coil wire and check for spark. If it is ok, I pull a plug and check for spark there too. One time, I pulled a sparkplug and my wife cranked the engine. Had no spark for the first 2-3 seconds but then I saw spark and the engine fired (4 of the 5 cylinders anyway). Best I can tell is that it is an intermittent spark problem, but again, no codes.

$1 says it is your fuel pump relay going bad. causes intermittant stalling and starting problems.

      danielflading,

Excellent suggestion about the fuel pump relay. I actually though about this and swaped the fuel pump relay with the one right next to it in the fuse box (both relays have the same pinout). I did this a month ago but it made no difference. I can hear the fuel pressure building in the fuel rail, so i'm assuming i'm getting fuel. Also tried some starter fluid but that didn't work either.

I hate to put in a new camshaft position sensor at $150 since I am not getting any codes.

      I tell ya, I'm stumped.

        > both relays have the same pinout

No they don't! The three identical relays
have nothing to do with fuel pump. One of the two
bigger and different relays is headlight, the other
        one is fuel pump.

I thought the fuel pump relay was the one in the middle (towards the firewall). This is the one I swapped. The car did not start again this morning. I disconnected the fuel rail and had very little pressure (should there be more after cranking?). I put a cup under the disconnected rail and cranked the engine. The cup filled with fuel so the fuse, relay, and pump are all working. Hooked everything back up and the car started fine. Wierd. What gives?

Although you didn't get a code, another possibility could be the cam position sensor. Usually, the same symptoms, cranks but won't start (the code you would get would be 3-1-4 on A6). As mentioned earlier, the fuel pump relay may be the culprit or the fuel system relay. Good luck.

Do the relays go bad in the 850s too? I figured after all those years with the 700/900s that Volvo would get the relay problem corrected. I carry a spare fuel pump relay in all my 700/900s. Did I figure wrong? I hate it when I do that.
