ABS/TRACS module V70-XC70 1998

The ABS/TRACS light have been coming on and off intermittantly foe awhile. After checking on this website and Bay 13 I realize that the problem is the module. Checking for parts on the internet I realize I can get a module for a lot less than the dealer. Question is, is this something that can be installed by a non-certified mechanic (i.e., me). Is is just a matter of plucking out the old board and sticking in a new one. Or does it require disassembling half the car to get to location. By the way, WHERE is the ABS/TRACS module located???? I hope this is not one of those... if you have to ask....

Thanks!

Here's removal information with pictures. DIY job with this instructions and the correct tool.
Vitor's web page

Click on the ABS/TRACS Repair link.

What is the mileage on your 98?
Beware of a used controller, it will have the same problems as the one you currently have on your car now. All the controllers will fail after 65,000 miles, some of them have lasted over 100,000 miles but the average is 75,000 miles.
On my 98 V70 it failed at 86,500 miles.

Thanks for the info Vitor. My car has 105K miles on it and I have been experiencing the problem for about the last 1000 miles or so, so I guess the module lasted a little longer than it should. Since I don't have the Torx wrench, I guess I am limited in options... I suppose that my local Sears Craftsman shop will not carry such a beast? Any other options?

A 5/32", six point socket worked great for me.

TomL is correct, a lot of people have used the 4 mm socket and some have used the 5/32" as well.
In some cases I send the E5 socket to people who are willing to wait the two days needed for the mail to deliver it.
Send me an e-mail if you need assistance with the tool or something else.
