Is there a need to replace tranny/drivetrain fluid? V70-XC70 1998

Just bought a '98 V70 AWD with about 53,000 miles on it. I cannot find whether or not units/systems such as the viscous coupling, the awd system, the transmission (or any others) need to have fluids flushed/replaced or whether this car requires anything beyond the basic oil change/tune-ups, etc., I would perform for any car. I want to treat the car right so it will treat me right. Are there any special things I need to be aware of (besides keeping tires properly inflated and running a matched set of tires)? Thanks

Is there a need to replace tranny/drivetrain fluid? V70-XC70 1998

Hi, There's a service bulliten on changing out the bevel gear oil. I'm pretty sure that .85 liters is the required quantity. Buy the liter of gear fluid at the Dealer and also the seal(for drain stop) if you can.
I used a homemade pump to remove-out and then pump back in the req'd new amount( as in the bulliten - I couldn't determine which stud to remove to add the drain "not available fron the factory") it was a little messy and I did it all under the car... it would be easier jacking up the car safely + and taking off the front rt tire.
    D~

Do you know offhand at what mileage the bevel gear oil should be changed (or where I might find the service bulletin that gives the indication?)
      Thanks

I'd change the transmission fluid now. If using non-synthetic, change at least what is in the pan every 15,000 miles or yearly (better to change it all, of course). Ideally, you want to change it before it turns color (showing oxidation).
If you use AMSOIL ATF, and change it all, then plan on changing what is in the pan every 45,000 miles/3 years and you'll be good to go.

The fluid starts out life red in color. If it gets burned it turns brown to black. If the color is not red, the fluid loses its viscosity and must be changed (complete flush). On many cars, such as Nissan's, Toyota's etc., the fluid will stay nice and pink for many miles and may never need to be changed. On my 1999 XC, this is not the case. Many will say its due to the tires, but the fact of the matter is the AWD design was rushed to market and the transmission for 2 wheel drives is not strong enough to run AWD and therefore gets hot and burns the fluid. I learned 2 things the hard way (transmission failure at 66,000 miles). 1. When you take your car to the dealer for a XX,000 mile service and the book says "check fluids", the dealer does not check the fluids. 2. My car turns the tranny fluid brown rather quickly (15,000 miles). To answer your question, pull your tranny dipstick out and check the fluid color yourself and flush it or have it flushed at the first signs of discoloration.

Welcome to the life of a Volvo owner. Though the manuals don't say specifically, you'll find many as myself change the transmission fluid. I happen to change mine about every third oil change or 15,000 miles. It's not difficult to do and am not sure if you do your own maintenance. I would go to Bay 13 as an excellent source to walk you through several maintenance steps for your car.Regarding the other points you mentioned I do all the maintenance points stated in the car service manual. Enjoy the ride.

Don't just drain and fill...this leaves quite a bit of tranny fluid in the system...do a full flush as described on Bay13. I don't think it's necessary to do it as often as 3 oil changes but that's up to you. Make sure you use the right oil when you do. A lot of people have gone with synthetics, but read up on other's experiences here...the AWD tranny is especially finicky when it comes to the type of oil put in and will buck and burp if it doesn't like it, but be smooth as can be if you get the right one. Since my car isn't AWD, couldn't give you what's best...just read your manual and then look around. Many say Mobil-1...others are saying Amsoil...etc., if you go the Synthy route.
