Check Engine light...computer? S70

The check engine light turned on in my 98 s70. Mechanic decided it was a bad wire to the computer or an issue with the computer itself, and said to take it to a Volvo dealership. I haven't heard much about the computers going awry with these, is this common?
Any advice on the subject is welcome!

Shayna

Follow up on CEL and Valve questions S70 1998

Thanks for the feedback...
Took it to Volvo today, they advised that I need a new air pump and valve as well as an ECT sensor/thermostat. Whoppin' bill: $948. Not going to bite that one, I've found plenty of advice on replacing the air pump and ect sensor in the archives.

A question about the valve realated to the air pump. I believe Volvo called it a pump valve, but I've seen references to check valves, SAS valves, PAIR valves, and pulsed/secondary air injection valves. Are those all different name references to the same valve? Or do they refer to separate valves...and if so, which is the one that fails/needs replacing?

As always, any advice on the subject is welcome!

Thanks

Shayna

Oh...Don't have the paper with codes handy, will post later.

As your "mechanic" what the code was, and write it down...it's usually several digits, and maybe a letter. Post the code here, we'll tell you what we think..

It's almost always the gas cap, a vaccuum elbow at the intake, or the purge valve.

The only way to know for sure is hook up an OBDII reader and read the
stored error codes. That will tell you what tripped the light. Did
the mechanic mention what codes were read?

I have had my 98 S70 stall (twice) and that tripped the CEL light. The code
indicated turbo over boost. But I was at idle and stopped when it happened
(so there was no over boost possible). So it is possible the code is not accurate and there can be another cause. A dealer would have the most
experience with these "edge" cases.
