Occasional fuel odour/ thermostat/ fuel mileage. 850

I've noticed a strong raw fuel odour occasionally, I doesn't seem to happen when I fill the tank or anything, I fact if anything it appears most often when the tank is very low (and considering the recent fuel prices that is quite often!!!) I've also noticed that at times my coolant temp gauge drops down while driving, at first I assumed it was an electrical fault, now I think it may be a sticking(open) thermostat, seems to negatively affect my fuel mileage. I read that these cars had decent fuel mileage, mine seems a little thirsty, ANY THOUGHTS??? (The problem might be that my previous car was a 92 Jetta Deisel, don't miss the car but do miss the mileage!!!)

If you have a wagon pull up the rear decking (above the
spare) and check that area for a fuel leak. Same for a
sedan, I guess (but with a wagon you would be more likely
to smell it). I recall posts where people had fuel leaks
    in that area.

Thermostats last about 70K miles. This site has
    more details and repair instructions:

I currently get 25 mpg driving mostly highway. It was around
20 when my driving was 50% highway.

Diesel is $2.45 / gallon here in the S.F. Bay Area (premium is
$2.35)! Today, that is. Tomorrow it will be more. Overall,
I'm pretty happy with my milage considering the cars size and the
actual amount of power on tap on my S70 T5.

As for the fuel odor take a look at the fuel lines under the hood, most specifically the one that goes into the fuel pressure regulator. It gets hard and brittle and leaks fuel all the time, put a new hose and clamps on it.
