Anyone used Volvo OEM tow hitch wiring kit? V70-XC70 2000

I have ordered the factory wiring harness to replace the generic unit my dealer installed (it failed after 3 years).

Has anyone installed this kit themselves? Any gotchas?

I will be using this with a pop-up camper. Is the 7 pin connector included the same type as used on campers in the US or is it something different?

Thanks,

Steve

Anyone used Volvo OEM tow hitch wiring kit? V70-XC70 2000

I received and installed the kit today.

The kit itself goes together very easily on the wagons, at least, just plug n play (the connections are already in place on the taillight assemblies, and there is a "T" connector that goes in front of the bulb failure warning module). The provided pigtail, as expected, is not US trailer friendly, as it has separate turn and brake light lines. I'm sure the $55 adapter has the converter built in...but I chose instead to cut off the included connector and rewire using a standard RV 7-wire connector. Since the US standard has turn and stop lights combined, I also had to put a generic converter inline between the harness and the connector. A few butt splices and some trailer debugging later and all works, including the backup lights which would not have been available had I used the Volvo 7-4 adapter. I can also use a cheap generic RV to 4-pin adapter ($10) when I want to pull a trailer that only has the flat 4-pin connection.

Since my RV style connector would not fit in the mounting hole in the factory hitch, I left the pigtail in the spare tire well, and will drape it out the hatch when I need it. This is how I've done it with our previous wagon and it works fine, plus the connector is not exposed to the elements year-round.

Overall I'm satisfied, though I think the price for the harness is a bit excessive, I can see where the costs come in as it's clearly a handmade part...

hi,
the factory kit is not hard to install,it plugs into a grey multi plug in the rear of the cars boot space, then you have to install a extra relay into the REM module which is in the l/h side of the boot carge area, then normally there is a sowftware download if you want the auto cancel of the cars fog lamps when a trailer is connected (only a dealer can do this). dont worry if it sounds hard the factory instructions are pretty good.im from uk so i cant comment on what plugs are used in the usa for trailers or caravans etc..

steve.

I have the OEM plug, but I'm not sure if my answer will be helpful to you. I picked up my car on European Delivery at a Paris Volvo dealer with the hitch and plug factory installed. It's a US model in every way, but the 7-pin plug is European. I'm not sure if the OEM plugs sold here in the US are the same or different. In any case, with the wiring already there, it was a piece of cake to splice in a US plug once I got home.
By the way, I rented a camping trailer (1500 kg) and towed it around southern Germany and Austria. What a great trip that was!!
