1999 S70 or 1995 850?? 850

I have a 1999 S70 with 101,000 miles. Thinking of trading for a 1995 850GLT wagon with 97,000 miles. Both cars in good shape with all records. What do you think? The ETC and ABS problems common with the 70's have not happened yet on my S70.

Thanks everyone for your opinions. I decided I agree with you all. I actually like the S70 quite a lot. I decided to wait at least a year, year +1/2, then get a 2001-2003 XC70.

    Keep the car.. 850

Since you are aware of the ABS and ETS module failures, then it doesn't make sense to trade to an older car.

You have been lucky and the car might go a few more thousand miles before these modules fail, maybe not.

Keep the car if is in otherwise good shape and you have done good maintenance. It will be cheaper to keep a newer car than to go to an older one.

If you just want a station wagon, why go back to 95? Remember the window switches in the center console? I would look for a 2001 V. The 95 is easier to read the DTC, has a cable under the gas peddle, and a pretty good ABS module.

Since they're both non-turbos there wouldn't be any performance advantage to the '95 GLT.

Do you want to trade a 6 year old car for a 10 year old car so it will be less trouble?

The car is drivable with the ABS module out, it just doen't have ABS, like most cars built during the last 100 years. It's a $200 repair if you get the module fixed. If you're worried about the ETC, the '98s still use throttle cables. Or as an alternative it would probably be cheaper to just replace a good working ETC even before it breaks than to sell the car and buy another one.

On the '99's if the ABS controller fails it affects the driveability of the car, not just the ABS; remember this is the CAN setup, and anyone who has ever dealt with "networks" knows that if one component fails, it has an effect on all the others. Also, this ABS controller is a bit more expensive than the 96-98 controllers, but I agree...

Why trade for an older car? If you are aware of the "issues" in the 99, and you've been the one servicing it, it is a known quantity. I rather prefer knowing what I have, and if I put the money into fixing it, I know what I have is that much better...

Just my two small monetary increments,

      Chris

I would suggest a 1998 S/V70 GLT before I would the 1995. Why you thinking of trading the 99, to avoid the ECT and ABS issues or you just don't care for it?
