I own a '90 240 wagon (9+ years) and bought a '98 XC 2 years ago. I chose the '98 for the same reason - ETM & software issues. On XC's, you might expect a prop shaft replacement ($$) at high miles. Lots of scare stories & folklore about the bevel gear. Keep the tires rotated and matched and you shouldn't have problems. Other than those issues, expect the same problems as any 850/V70 - ABS modules, turbo return oil leaks, heater core leaks and AC condensor. Everything is easy to fix except the AC. The V70 series is solid and well made like a 240. They handle much better, are quieter, safer and more fun to drive. I don't have a third seat but the footwell is shallow. Our 240 has over 240K on it and the XC has over 160K. I'd buy another '98.
