GEARBOX PROBLEM 850

Just afollow up, re my transmission problem. My Volvo dealer says that it is not the PNP switch, he says that it is probably some valves or solenoids in the gearbox. They flushed the gearbox to find that the liquid was full of bits, they then refilled it and tried the car, it was ok for about 5 miles then the same problem came back again and the car would not engage a gear, they claim that the gearbox will probably have to be changed. Last resort is that on Monday they are going to check some sort of valves that are outside the gearbox. Any ideas anyone as this will end up costing me about Usd 900 in labour to remove and refit the gearbox, plus about Usd 600 for a second hand gearbox from England, plus about Usd 300 to ship to here (Malta). Incidentally there are no other T5's on the island, that why I have to get one improted.Any suggestions?

Thanks for al your help.
Regards
Stretch.

With nothing to loose, did the dealer drop the pan for the tranny? If it ran for 5 miles with fresh fluid, then it could be dirt. Try cleaning out the pan, adding a couple of quarts, and flush the tranny with the home school method by disconnecting the cooler line and pouring it into large buckets. You will need about 10 liters for a flush.

Thanks Guys, I've got some more questions that and need your expert advice. The dealer says that the transmission has water mixed with the oil and that it needs to be replaced. They say that the cause was that when the car overheated because of a cracked hose and the cylinder head then blew, after replacing the head, they say that the transmission fluid should have been flushed. The head was replaced over a year ago and the car had worked perfectly till now, if there was water mixed with the fluid, would the gearbox last this long? the car would have reached an average of 70 mph every day since the head was changed. The clutch has never slipped.

Wow, that is a problem. I don't understand how water would last in a tranny for a year. The fluid is always above 100C and would have steamed the water out a long time ago. If there is still water (antifreeze), then the radiator will need to be replaced also, because that is the only place water can come from.
I would still try doing a complete flush after dropping the tranny pan and cleaning it throughly before investing in a new/rebuilt unit.

Flush it again, and do it yourself this time. Very easy to do. May even take a third time, but at about $25US a time, it is worth a try. How many miles total?
