850 a/c issue 850 1995

I bought my 850 a couple weeks ago and had the a/c recharged before i picked it up. it was working up until maybe 2-3 days ago. now it doesn't seem like the air is that cold. i'm pretty sure the compressor is turning on. ideas?

Before you change the evap, check to see if the a/c compressor clutch gap is correct. I think, but don't quote me here, it should be between .4 and .6 mm. If the gap is too large clutch can't be pulled in. It's like a coil and the magnetic field is not strong enough to pull it in if the gap is too large. There is a repair procedure on volvoclub.org.uk, somewhere. I had the same problem and my mechanic adjusted the clutch, I think he removed some shims to close the gap.
I wish I could get you closer on that website, I'll look around.

Bob

Good stuff, and miy repair cost 185.00, instead of a new evaporator. I have also heard installing a cabin air filter will help prolong the life of the evaporator.

You need a new evaporator unit. Take the car back and don't let them talk you into trying any stopleak. It won't work.... If they won't fix it get your money back. Hope your state has some used car protection laws.

How positive are you? I've read through a couple posts that seem similar and not all are saying it's the evaporator. What can I do to test the system? Leaks, receiver, compressor, evaporator, etc?

A leaking evaporator is a very common problem on the 850's. That is the only part of the a/c system that I have replaced on my '95 850. In contrast, it is the only part of the a/c system that is still the original part on my '89 740.
It is a big job to replace as the whole dash needs to be removed from the car to replace it. About $800 to $1200 to repair depending on where you have it done. You will find many posts here on the brickboard about evaporators on the 850.
