97 855 cargo cover 850 1997

hi -

currently have a 97 855 t-5 wagon. bought one of those trunk retractable cover thingies for the car (rear cargo cover i am told). on each side of the cover's "mounts", are two pencil eraser sized knobs that protrude from the rest of the unit. i assume these are supposed to fit into a bracket or something else that my car doesn't have. is this a matter best solved by drilling into the plastic trim to make some holes for this thing, or am i simply missing part of the unit?

any suggestions~
