850 engine noise-update 850

I took the '97 850 to the dealer to have the lifter noise checked out. They only get noisy when the engine is fully warmed and I let the car idle. The car has 140 K miles on it and I'm using M1 synthetic. The tech told me that replacing the O rings in the pan probably wouldn't fix the noise. He said that fix usually works on the '99 and up models. He said that my car probably needs new lifters. Does anyone know how much this would cost if I did it myself? The tech said that it wouldn't hurt it to keep driving it like this. I trust the dealership's service department.
