Rear shock installation V70-XC70

When replacing my rear shock absorbers do I remove the shock plus top bushing from inside the car? Or does it drop out the bottom. I assume out the top but want to be sure. Also, do I leave the car on the ground or put on a jack stand, remove the wheel and compress the spring with my floor jack and then remove the unit out the top.
Just want to be sure!
