We've purchansed a 2002 S60 AWD and have noticed that while on the highways, the speedometer reads 130 km/h (I'm Canadian) and yet just keeping up with most traffic and still have cars passing me. I thought this can't be true so I asked my spouse to drive our other car and compare the two cars while going 100 km/h. While our other car reads 100 km/h the S60 reads 110 km/h. We then took it into the dealer and explained the problem. They came back and told us that the speedomoter reading is within the allowable tolerance (WHAT !?). They told us that with their test equipment, while the speedometer reads 100 km/h, the actual speed is 92 km/h. They stress that this is within the VOLVO allowable tolerance and that every manufacturer has this tolerance. I phoned the service department for our other car and they told me what shows on the speedometer should be the actual speed. One other thing we noticed today is the car comes with the option of showing the actual speed in mph on a digital display near the bottom left hand corner of the dash (the regular speedometer in km is the dial-type). We checked the mph reading at 40 km/h on the speedometer and it showed 23 mph. 40 km/h is actually 24.8 mph through my metric converter and the difference is actually 8% which is exactly the same as what they have tested in their shop. Is anyone else experiencing this problem or am I the lucky one.
