A/C cuts out on me 850 1996

Good morning. I am having an A/C issue with my '96 850. Whenever I place the engine under load, i.e. accelerate, the A/C cuts off and does not cut back on. I have to turn the A/C switch off, leave it off for several minutes and then turn the switch back on before the A/C turns back on again. The A/C blows cold air whenever it is on. What is happening?
