I have a 1997 850 with a recently corrected problem identical to yours.
I had the freon exhausted and recharged, everything is great.
After exaustive reseach, I found that Volvo 850's are notorious for premature failures of the AC evaporators ($1300.00 behind dash repair as per local
Volvo dealer and my private Volvo repairman), the best insurance is annual
service of freon in system. The AC system needed 1.6 more to reach the required 1.8 volume of R134 Freon. This service must be performed by experienced repairman who will not over charge systemthus threatening evaporator.
Volvonically, Chuckster
