New 850 or...... 850

Well after making only 1 payment on my '96 850, its totaled after spinning out on the freeway on black ice. Thankful to Volvo, I walked away. After checking around I don't know if I should get another used older model 850 for around around 8000 or go for a little newer older model of s40 for 12-13000. I am thinking the latter will still have a warranty but I am not sure why they seem to be so much cheaper than other models of Volvo's. Any suggestions on the next one?
