The S40 is the entry level model. It's smaller than your 850. Before you decide, give the s40 a good test drive to make sure you are comfortable with the ride and handling. I suspect the 850 has a better ride. Also make sure the s40 is large enough for your needs. My personal feeling is, if all other things are equal, a newer car with less milage is a better bet than an older one.
