If you want the S40, go ahead and get it, just make sure it fits your needs. You are the one who is going to live with it, so follow your heart. It doesn't matter that the S40 shares its' platform with a Mazda, many cars share a platform and that is a trend that is growing fast (for example, the 2004 Chevy Malibu shares a platform with the Saab 9-3. The Saab is a Saab and the Chevy is a Chevy.) What makes the S40 a Volvo is the emphasis on the safety equipment; anti-lock brakes, pretensioners on the seatbelts, side airbags and head protection airbags, WHIPS and anti-whiplash seats. Actually, the IIHS rating on this car is good. The S40 would not be MY first choice, but then I am not working with your budget.
