Seal Woes 850

I have an N/A '96 855. While going uphill there is a momentary but strong smell of burning oil that passes once the road levels out. There is no noticable loss of oil in the 1700 miles I have owned the car and there are no spots beneath the car. I do plan to replace the flame trap just as a precaution. Does a leaking rear main seal ever allow oil to hit the exhaust manifold? Does this sound like the beginings of a RMS leak?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
