Why are 850's cheap in California? 850

My son's looking for a manual trans wagon in the Bay area. We'd been thinking about a 740 turbo, since we love the one we had (and he totaled, convincing me that he should not drive anything but a Volvo!) but he's having trouble finding one that looks like it will last. They all have high commuter miles. We're noticing that the 850's seem very reasonably priced, but our mechanic here in Seattle says that's because they're nothing but trouble and he won't even work on them. But lots of folks seem to love theirs. Can anyone shed some light on this before the kid buys something stupid like an MG? Should he consider an 850? Any years better than others? I notice that there seems to be some agreement that the auto trans can be a problem: how's the manual tranny? Thanks for any advice you can give.
