Agreed with Klaus's advice. A rattle should be a sign of a bad mount or other suspension problem.

Shocks are bad when there is too much movement. The quick and dirty test I learned long ago was to bounce one corner at a time and let off at the top of a bounce. The car should stop bouncing almost immediately. Maybe this is more applicable the the early 70s cars I started driving on but if you are hearing knocking or squeaking sounds when you bounce the corners it may be other components than shocks.

BTW: St Louis streets are not kind to shocks either.
