Did I short my Starter? 850 1994

Thx, I managed to get the starter halfway out last evening but I've had second thoughts that the starter is the cause. My thinking is that since there shouldn't have been power to the starter, it could be igition related (although I didn't touch the ignition system).
By the way, I did also put di-electric grease over the starter connections and cleaned the battery/body ground connection and I'm wondering if that might be the cause of any short and if just cleaning the di-electric grease off could resolve the problem.
Any thoughts?
Ed
