When do I give up? 850 1995

We have 3 Hondas at the moment. There are worse choices.

If you can find one with a stick, it will have something of a soul and character. Recent 4-cylinder Hondas have a timing chain rather than a timing belt so you never have to worry about changing it. I agree that the automatics are pretty bland, but there is more to life than messing around with cars that don't work.

I may give up completely on Eurocars after the Bimmer (spending the weekend at the dealer waiting for a part to arrive in Germany.)
