Re: No brake lights! Any recalled? 850 1995

The brake light switch went on our 96 back in July around 60K. I also had no idea it was bad, as the brake light warning circuit is also disabled when this switch fails- a poor design in my opinion. The shiftlock switch would not work either, so I thought it was the microswitch- so I replaced it before I realized the brake light switch was the culprit. It is easy to replace the brake switch- just pulls out of the bracket above the brake pedal. Note the orientation of the old switch before you pull it out, and just insert the new one the same way. There are 2 switches on the brake pedal- I believe the upper switch is the cruise control switch- but I may have it backward. The Haynes manual describes the procedure. The newer 850 models have a self-adjusting switch that will adjust to the correct length after you install it. An older manually-adjusted switch is used on the older models (93-94???).

Part number for a 96 is: 9128577-5 probably the same for a 95.

List price is US$27.73.
