Oil change interval? V70-XC70 2001

I recently became a first time Volvo owner with the purchase of the new V70XC. So far I love this car. A couple of little adjustments were made to stop a glovebox squeak and heat shield rattle but that is all. My question is about how often to change the oil. The manual and service reminder will tell me to wait until 7500 miles. I've always done this service at 3000-5000 miles. What do you long time Volvo owners do? I'm at 3000 now and am questioning the recommendations.

Also, anyone else with a new XC, what have been your experiences so far? Any problems, adjustments needed, recurring annoyances?
