Replacement of Rear Shocks in Pairs? V70-XC70 2000

The damaged right rear shock on my 2000 XC was replaced under warranty at 18,000 miles. Is accepted practice to replace only one rear shock and not the other? If only one shock is repaired can this pace the AWD or other systems at risk. Are there either risks of further mechancial failure or safety issues with replacing only one shock?

I am aware that other auto manufactures recommend replacing shocks in pairs.
