Status of my 1995 - 850 850

So, this is where I am at with my 95- non turbo 850:
180,000 miles (had it since 1997). No rust (except driver's door), no crashes, paint is excellent.
*With the tutorial assistance, I did the A/C evap, etc., this past summer...
*Engine is losing 1 qt oil every 500-ish miles (this is brand new problem). Started happening about 5 weeks ago. Two years ago I changed the PVC system (FCP Groton kit). The engine exterior is spotless, no leaks or drips. Under the spark plug cover is about 1 teaspoon of oil, that's all. No oil in radiator fluid...no muck under cap. I fear engine internal problems. Are there tests that I can do (DIY) to determine what may be going on?
*When I accelerate, the rpms rise and then drop. Example...traveling 50 mph...accelerate gently, rpms rise about 500 rpms, then drop. You would think it was shifting gears, but it isn't. If it were a manual tranny, I would say that the clutch was slipping. Odd feeling.
* Driver's door is rusted, got a nice one from a seller for $100, now I have to figure out how to swap them. Any advice is appreciated...I don't know what to do about the tubular connection. The hinges look straight forward, but that umbilical tube has me scratching my head.
* Other than that (smile)...car seems fine... I am trying to avoid buying another car. It needs a new radio, but I don't want to invest till I get this engine thing cleared.
