Volvo code #s are not at all the same as what a generic scan tools (OBD2 codes) will be and Volvos VST has better diagnostic abilties and sees more codes than the aftermarket scan tools do (costs alot more also).

Definately do what you have in mind but don't bother doing any maintenance on the airpump (like removing it and trying to dry it out) because if there's now water in it or it's noisy, it's just NG. It's an electric motor and once water gets in there, it's simply shot. The "check valve" being defective is why your airpump would get water in it, but if it's been defective for a while, chances are that your pump is now NG too.
