Re: T-Stat Open/Close 850 1994 Turbo

I have a 94 854 Turbo with 166K miles on it. The thermostat failed which gave me cold engine temp. The t-stat on mine obviously stuck open. The majority of the posts concerning t-stats complain of cold temps, thus it seems that the majority of t-stats stick open when dead. I know that most t-stats are designed to fail and lock in the open position as locking in the closed position would be a serious problem in a matter of a few miles (overheat the motor). I could not promise that yours will indeed fail and open, because if I did then murphy's law would kick me in the rear. For the $~16.00+ antifreeze the cost is minimal and the job only takes 1/2 hr if you are slow. IMHO I would replace the t-stat now and forget about it. Order the t-stat with gasket from IPD's web site along with the "special" T-40 3/8" drive 7" long tool. Buy a gallon of antifreeze and a can of penetrant, set aside an hour, a bit of simple green or similar cleaner, some paper towels, a catch pan, and garden hose, and some other goodies. I did mine outside of my apartment complex and was done before the neighbor unloaded her groceries. Easy and painless, if the screws come out easily. If you want some detailed info on how I did mine, just ask. Till then, have fun.
