I have a 94 854 Turbo with 166K miles on it. The thermostat failed which gave me cold engine temp. The t-stat on mine obviously stuck open. The majority of the posts concerning t-stats complain of cold temps, thus it seems that the majority of t-stats stick open when dead. I know that most t-stats are designed to fail and lock in the open position as locking in the closed position would be a serious problem in a matter of a few miles (overheat the motor). I could not promise that yours will indeed fail and open, because if I did then murphy's law would kick me in the rear. For the $~16.00+ antifreeze the cost is minimal and the job only takes 1/2 hr if you are slow. IMHO I would replace the t-stat now and forget about it. Order the t-stat with gasket from IPD's web site along with the "special" T-40 3/8" drive 7" long tool. Buy a gallon of antifreeze and a can of penetrant, set aside an hour, a bit of simple green or similar cleaner, some paper towels, a catch pan, and garden hose, and some other goodies. I did mine outside of my apartment complex and was done before the neighbor unloaded her groceries. Easy and painless, if the screws come out easily.
