850 automatic no reverse 850

Why not replace the trans with one from a wrecking yard? At 300K miles is the car finished? Can he find a better car for the next 100K for the cost of a trans, less than $1000 from a junk yard. If everything else is fine then why not a trans from a wrecked 850? What's the next 100K to 150K going to cost if he acquires another used 850? What am I missing, other than the 300K on the odometer.
