Re: ATF Drain or flush 850 1997

1. the benefits of synthetic vs conventional in an engine oil do not

translate at all well to ATF. Beware over-generalizing. (Not to mention

over-reacting [to Volvo's recommendation].)

2. Back before Dexron had attained its current level of anti-oxidation

properties, back before torque converters locked up, (ie, 20+ years ago),

the recommended interval for changing ATF was 25K miles. Many of the first

FWD cars failed to sufficiently cool their ATF. But this is not true of my

850. Intelligence dictates that I modify/discard old concerns once they no

longer pertain...

3. I used to change my ATF every 25K miles, too. But times (and

technology, and ATF) has changed (improved drastically) since then...

4. My 850 has plenty of cooling capacity, so my ATF does not see extreme

high temperatures, so it doesn't burn up. In fact, if the ATF does burn

up, it's not the ATF's (nor, likely, the owner's) fault, nor would fresher

ATF have prevented the problem.

5. Superstitious behavior often makes us feel better. Keep scaring those

elephants away...
