Leaking around windshield V70-XC70 1998

Our '98 V70 has sprung a leak! When it rains, water leaks/drips from the rear-view mirror. There is a little rust along the seam at the top of the windshield where the rubber windshield gasket (?) meets the metal. That seems to be the culprit. The windshield is an 11-year-old replacement. Any suggestions about how I might seal out the elements without causing damage? I was thinking of a bead of clear silicone caulking. Your thoughts are welcome!
