front suspension 850 1995

I noticed that everytime I hit a bump or go through a dip in the road that the front wheels really move up and down and that sometimes I hear the rub on the wheel liner. The struts were recently replaced, but what can I do to increase the resistance so the wheels don't have so much play in them? Do I need harder springs, or are better struts what I need?
Sometimes when one wheel hits a pothole, I feel a really hard thump, almost like something is ready to break, but from reading everything on this board, it seems like that is the nature of the beast and perfectly normal for the suspension.
Thanks for any advice.
