850 brakes driving me INSANE (and broke) 850 1996

So many brake problems since purchase late last year! Arghhh!
First the ABS pump fails: $1500 (Aust)
Then, one month later, the ABS control module fails: another $1500.
Now, an intermittent noise which sounds terrible - like someone sharpening a knife on an angle-grinder. Comes on/goes off with no rhyme or reason
- What could this be?
My optimistic (ie - lo/no cost theory) is that one of the brake pads has decided to float freely from time and time and just brushes against the rotor; perhaps its picked up a bit of dirt, hence the screeching.
The brakes on this car are bleeding me white.
