How does my Turbocharger work? 850 1995

I've been a bit curious as to how my turbocharger works. Does it basically spin an internal fan which brings in more air into the intake manifold and the more air gives more power? I know a supercharger works using a centrifugal pulley system, so it a turbocharger the same? Anyone know exactly how it works? I think it's neat how on my 850 Turbo if I give it low pedal pressure the car accelerates normally but when I apply more pressure I hear this wooshing sound and the turbo kicks in. But I think superchargers give you power right off of idle. Also, is our 850 Turbos equipted with an intercooler?

Thanks!
