air pump/check valve 850 1997

I recently failed DEQ weth a PO410, no check engine light at the dash but the OBD II scan indicated the code. I found the check valve was replaced aproximately two years ago and I am curious what the procedure to diagnose if the cause is the pump or the valve ? I thing i have seen posts indicating the new valves have been very reliable. I am having some noise in the airpump but I don't know if this would throw a PO410 ? I am very confused. Has anyone had luck using a used airpump?

Thanks,
