Parking brake-she a no work now V70-XC70

About 3 months ago my parking brake on my 98 V70 would work "intermitently"
as if the cable was there, and then it was not. I popped off the console lid and tightened the torx nut. Seemed to work consistently for about a few weeks, then it went to internmitent, and now it feels like there is no cable attached at all to it-like pulling on something with nothing attached. What can it be?
Any history of problems with these things?
