96 Volvo 850 Dashboard problems 850 1996

I have a 1996 Volvo 850 with a very loose dashboard. I first noticed the problem because of the noise – the front panel squeaked and made snapping noises every time the car went over a small bump. I was able to stop the noise by placing a small rubber wedge between the dash and the windshield. It worked for a while. Over time, the dash has gotten looser and looser, now I have about an inch or two of play between the dash and front windshield firewall.

My Volvo mechanic said that one or more of the connectors that attach the dash panel to the firewall were broken and would cost about $1,500 for a dealer to repair. Right now that cost is a little to stiff for me to step up to.

Has anybody run into this before? Is a repair or workaround possible by a decent home mechanic (i.e., someone like myself)?
