I too work at a dealer, have replaced my fair share of rear main seals too BUT have never heard of or seen where any "butcher" somehow bent a starter ring gear (not technically a flywheel on an AT trans car, assuming not MT?).
Someone would REALLY have to be a "hack" mechanic to somehow bend or distort a starter ring gear and/or damage the "windows" that the RPM crank sensor needs to read RPM, crank position for timing.
Although not easily seen with the trans installed, one should be able to verify that notion with trans still in place (RPM sensor removed) before removing the trans. (a 9 hour, book-time job).
Anyone check the main relay and wires on the plastic bracket just on top of the radiator, left side? FP relay under fusebox cover?
